Chief Constable
Abbotsford is a city located in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia, adjacent to Greater Vancouver. With an estimated population of 153,000 people, it is the largest municipality in the province by area and the fifth largest by population. The municipality’s southern boundary is the Canada–United States border, across which is Sumas, Washington. In Canada, it is bordered by the Township of Langley to the west, the Fraser River and the District of Mission to the north, and the City of Chilliwack to the east. Much of Abbotsford enjoys views of Mount Baker (to the southeast, in Washington) and the Coast Mountains (to the north).
The Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) maintains its focus on the mission to make Abbotsford the safest city in BC while holding the trust of the community by maintaining the department’s values of Integrity, Honour, Courage, and Service and holding true to the motto of “Strength in Community”. With these values and mission at the forefront, the AbbyPD is seeking their next Chief Constable. The Chief Constable is accountable to the Abbotsford Police Board and is responsible for providing operational and administrative leadership and direction for the AbbyPD. The Chief Constable will work closely with the Police Board, the City management team, and various external groups to maintain the AbbyPD’s role as a partner in the community.
The next Chief Constable will be known for their business acumen, commitment to innovative and leading-edge practices, accountability, continuous improvement, service delivery excellence, and fiscal accountability. The Chief Constable will have a major role in ensuring that the vision of the AbbyPD is clearly communicated and carried out throughout the department and the City of Abbotsford. In today’s challenging policing landscape, the Chief Constable will lead through their senior leadership team, sworn and civilian personnel, and volunteers to deal with constantly changing work requirements and challenges by creating an environment of transparency and trust, where decisions are made and applied on a consistent basis. The character of the Chief Constable will be one that is authentic and consistent with the principles and values of a professional, accountable, ethical, and equitable police department. Strong and effective communication is essential as numerous initiatives require the AbbyPD to work together with community groups, media, other police agencies, and stakeholders. To be successful, the Chief Constable will develop a thorough understanding of the AbbyPD’s organizational structure and strategy, the community culture in Abbotsford, and the various key stakeholders.
