Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC

Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC) was established in 1958. ASTTBC regulates more than 8,000 technology professionals including applied science and engineering technologists and technicians and technical specialists to protect the safety, health and well-being of the public and the environment. This is achieved by establishing and upholding a Code of Ethics and standards for qualified, competent and accountable practice. If the Code of Ethics or standards are not met, ASTTBC will take action through enforcement of the legislation, regulations and bylaws of the Professional Governance Act. ASTTBC works closely with the other PGA regulators in a collaborative manner.

These professionals include engineering technologists and technicians in eighteen disciplines and ten technical specialties in the broad field of applied science. With over 8,000 registrants, ASTTBC is the nineth largest professional regulatory organization in BC. The Registrar is a member of the senior leadership team of ASTTBC, accountable to the Board of Directors and reports to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). As one of the officers appointed by the ASTTBC Board, the Registrar works closely with the CEO in carrying out ASTTBC’s mandate as a regulator in British Columbia under the Professional Governance Act (2018). The Registrar is responsible for supporting the statutory committees in developing and establishing registration requirements, registration of applicants, maintaining the register and administering processes to ensure registrants’ compliance to the PGA, Bylaws, Standards of Competency and Code of Ethics. The Registrar assists in developing and implementing organizational strategies, policies and procedures for optimal productivity and efficiency. To support these functions, the Registrar supervises a Deputy Registrar and manages a staff of approximately eight individuals.

The Registrar will be a proven leader with the ability to deliver effective policy, operational, and administrative services that align with and allow the organization to meet its regulatory, strategic, and operational goals. With a track record of working with external stakeholders and government bodies to further a progressive mandate, ideally, the Registrar will have worked within a licensing/regulatory body and understand the various underlying complexities. The role of Registrar is complex and calls for an individual who is passionate and interested in sciences. The successful candidate will possess the presence to ensure credibility and to be viewed and respected as a trusted leader of absolute integrity. Experience liaising with a Board of Directors and CEO and experience working as part of the Executive Team to guide strategy development and set priorities is critical.
