City of Vancouver
Chief Equity Officer

Located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh, Vancouver has a commitment to becoming a City of Reconciliation. Vancouver consistently ranks as one of the world’s most livable cities and is working toward being the greenest city in the world. Named among Canada’s Top 100 Employers, CB’s Top Employers, and Canada’s Greenest Employers, the City of Vancouver seeks colleagues who can help shape and embody our core commitments to sustainability, reconciliation, equity and outstanding quality of life for all residents.

Reporting to the City Manager, the Chief Equity Officer leads the implementation of the City’s Equity Framework and acts as a central resource to all City of Vancouver departments, services, and programs.  With leadership from the Chief Equity Officer, the Equity Office acts as catalyst, leader, collaborator, convener, and educator across the City’s business units, supporting units with building the policies, tools, and practices to maintain the commitment to equity. This Office builds capacity and enables the City’s workforce to promote and model equity principles and practices in the community and within the organization, advancing the City towards its objective of excellence in local government, and sustaining an organization culture that is inclusive, welcoming, and responsive to the needs of under-represented and marginalized groups. Leading a small team of direct reports and working closely with the City Leadership Team and the Senior Director, Indigenous Relations, the Chief Equity Officer identifies and prioritize gaps and opportunities to achieve a consistent organization-wide model of excellence in demonstrating the principles of equity.

The ideal candidate is a strategic and results-oriented leader with strong relationship-building skills and a deep commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion. They have a proven track record of effective leadership in complex organizations, ideally within the municipal or government sector. The Chief Equity Officer possesses a strategic vision and the ability to develop and implement comprehensive equity strategies aligned with organizational goals. They excel at building relationships with stakeholders, including elected officials, employees, and external partners, fostering collaboration and driving change. The successful candidate will be able to convey complex concepts clearly, fostering understanding among diverse audiences, building trust, and approaching work with empathy and cultural sensitivity. Committed to equity principles, they foster an inclusive workplace culture, leaving a positive impact within the organization.

We are working with PFM Executive Search in support of our commitment to recruit a diverse leadership team that represents the community we proudly serve. We will be actively encouraging Indigenous applicants, people of colour, all genders, LGBT2Q+ and persons with disabilities to apply. Accommodations will be provided upon request during the selection process.
