Chief Operating Officer
Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia regulates and governs the engineering and geoscience professions under the authority of the Professional Governance Act.
The organization is charged with setting robust standards for entry and enforcing high standards of professional and ethical practice in order to protect the public. Only individuals and firms licensed by Engineers and Geoscientists are permitted by law to undertake and assume responsibility for engineering and geoscience work in the province.
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for ensuring that the organization is positioned to perform at a high level and respond to the demands of its operating environment. This includes providing ongoing analysis of the operating environment and developing the organization’s strategy – both long term corporate strategies and short-term operating plans – and driving alignment of key internal resources to meet those demands. To achieve these objectives, the COO oversees the enrichment, management and sustainability of strategic relationships, including relationships with government, the public, registrants, industry, and other key stakeholders – all those associated with and reliant on the regulation of engineering and geoscience in BC. The COO directs operational functions of the organization, including Communications, Programs and Professional Development, Corporate Governance and Strategy, Government Relations, Information Systems, and Privacy. They will oversee corporate business maturity efforts, business resilience, and monitor drivers of business performance. They provide oversight and act as the signing officer for Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s two registered charities and assume other duties as assigned by the CEO.
The ideal candidate is a proven collaborator and relationship builder who is able to identify strategic opportunities (both internally and externally) that will ensure the organization meets its regulatory obligations, provides outstanding support to its registrants and to the public, and addresses market challenges with creativity and innovation. They will be an exceptional communicator who understands the vital role of the organization, the true value of its registrants, and who can articulate that message passionately, to a wide variety of audiences. As a master relationship builder and a skillful advocate, the COO is able to identify and work with the appropriate channels to ensure the message of the organization is heard and acknowledged.
The selected candidate will bring years of leadership experience, ideally gained through a career working within a comparably complex organization in the public sector, regulatory or association environment. The candidate will have demonstrable experience leading the strategic planning, government relations and communications functions, and conducting stakeholder engagement with registrants, the public and other external parties. Additionally, the candidate will provide guidance, mentorship and support to their team, and act as a champion for an inclusive workplace culture where ideas are welcome, and goals are achieved through collaboration.
