Sector Director, Agrifood & Natural Resources
Genome British Columbia (Genome BC) leads genomics innovation on Canada’s West Coast and facilitates the integration of genomics into society. A recognized catalyst for government and industry, Genome BC invests in research, entrepreneurship and commercialization in life sciences to address challenges in key sectors such as health, forestry, fisheries, aquaculture, agrifood, energy, mining and environment. Genome BC partners with many national and international public and private funding organizations to drive BC's bioeconomy.
Reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer and VP Sectors, the Sector Director, Agrifood and Natural Resources (the Director) will be responsible for leading and overseeing the execution of all activities and initiatives pertaining to Genome BC’s Agrifood and Natural Resources portfolio. In addition, the Director will lead business development within the Agrifood and Natural Resources sectors including the development of external partnerships relevant to BC’s bioeconomy; forestry, agrifood, mining, energy, environment, and fisheries and aquaculture. The Director will manage a strong team of individuals who are responsible for optimizing the outcomes of Genome BC’s portfolio and developing collaborations and strategic partnerships that lead to the adoption of genomics across sectors. The Director will lead operations for the team while supporting the CSO and VP Sectors in the development of short and long term strategic planning. The Director will represent Genome BC at Agrifood and Natural Resources Sector external meetings, and help enhance Genome BC’s existing portfolio and attract potential applicants for Genome BC programs.
As the ideal candidate, you are educated at a graduate degree level in a scientific discipline, and are able to communicate effectively and credibly with academia and industry alike. You are able to think strategically, identifying potential partnership opportunities and exploring correlations that may exist across the sectors in your portfolio. You are equally adept at understanding the needs of your team and providing the leadership, guidance and direction necessary to assist in the achievement of individual and team objectives. You are a master of balancing the big picture view against the operational requirements of your department, and are comfortable working with both complexity and occasional ambiguity. Additionally, you are a talented project leader and program manager, with experience of defining, implementing and overseeing multiple projects at different stages, simultaneously.
