General Manager, Transit & Emergency Services

The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) provides regional governance and services throughout Vancouver Island’s beautiful central east coast. Communities within the region include the municipalities of Nanaimo, Lantzville, Parksville, and Qualicum Beach, as well as seven unincorporated Electoral Areas. Established in 1967, the RDN is one of British Columbia’s most populous Regional Districts and home to more than 170,000. It is also an award-winning organization and develops and oversees innovative programs that effectively steward the region’s environment and resources, and create a positive quality of life for residents.

The General Manager, Transit & Emergency Services (the GM, TES) directs, coordinates and plans staff activities related to transportation and emergency services functions. The GM, TES oversees the Regional District’s transportation and emergency services policy direction and coordinates and provides advice to the Board and Committees. Working closely with other levels of government, not-for-profit societies and other agencies, the GM, TES ensures a coordinated approach to both service areas across the RDN, while also supporting and collaborating with local delivery bodies to ensure they have the tools and resources they need to be effective on the ground. As a member of the RDN’s leadership team, the GM, TES also contributes to the strategic priorities of the organization as a whole and provides effective and supportive leadership to the TES team.

As the ideal candidate, you have progressed in your career to a senior role in transit or transportation, with proven experience in leading large teams and significant change across a complex, diverse and multi-stakeholder environment. You place considerable weight in the power of positive relationships and recognize when it’s appropriate to take a leadership position or a supporting position. With experience working with elected officials as well as a highly unionized labour force, you have the communications and listening skills needed to ensure priorities, concerns and perspectives are understood and addressed in a meaningful and respectful way. You also have a reputation for being an experienced manager who can lead and engage a diverse team of functional professionals and experts, and coach and mentor for future succession. In addition, you have the leadership skills and experience required to participate as a member of the RDN’s executive leadership team. Your experience is augmented by a degree in a related field. Experience in or exposure to emergency services or fire suppression is an asset.
