Public Safety Commissioner

Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) consists of 23 villages and is comprised of descendants of the Coast Salish Aboriginal people who live in the present day Greater Vancouver area, Gibson’s Landing, and Squamish River watershed. The Squamish Nation has occupied and governed the territory since beyond recorded history, and the culture is rich and resilient. The Nation continues to practice its customs and traditions, which are strongly interconnected with the traditional territory. Rooted in the lands, customs and traditions that are the foundations of Squamish People, the Nation is pursuing many exciting and ambitious programs and activities to build upon that strong foundation for generations to come.

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Public Safety Commissioner is responsible for leading the operational and strategic development of public safety initiatives and projects across Squamish Nation territory, communities and departments. The Public Safety Commissioner is the senior liaison with external public safety agency staff, including the Integrated First Nation Unit, RCMP, West Vancouver Police Department, BCEHS, EMBC, Canadian Red Cross and E- Comm 911. The Public Safety Commissioner will also liaise with, external Squamish Nation entities like Hiy’am Housing and Nch’kay Development Corporation and/or local governments like Metro Vancouver, City of North Vancouver, District of North Vancouver, District of Squamish, Squamish Lillooet Regional District. This position chairs the Squamish Nation Emergency Preparedness Committee and actively promotes regional coordination with a diverse range of internal and external public safety bodies.

The ideal candidate will be a proven leader with experience in facilitating people, processes and delivering services to ensure the safety and security of the people across the Squamish Nation territory, communities and departments. They bring respect for and understanding of the unique nature of indigenous communities and culture. In addition, they will have natural leadership skills and an ability to think strategically and execute policy and procedures that will be key to the success of the Public Safety Commissioner.

A true collaborator, the ideal candidate is multi-faceted, balancing facilitation with problem-solving and a drive for best practices. Superior interpersonal and communication skills and a proven ability to create a positive and enthusiastic work environment are hallmarks of a suitable candidate. They will be known for their ability to develop trusting working relationships with elected officials, employees, external partners and community members. In addition, the incumbent will be focused on providing friendly approachable customer service and planned community development.
