Surrey School District
Director, Capital Project Office

Surrey School District is the largest district in BC with over 72,000 students, an annual operating budget of almost $800 million and capital assets approaching $1 billion. One of the fastest growing districts in the province, the Surrey School District is dedicated to their vision of leadership in learning. With 131 kindergarten to Grade 12 schools serving Surrey, White Rock and Barnston Island, the Surrey School District employs approximately 10,000 teachers, administrators, professionals and support staff, all of whom work tirelessly to ensure that children are getting the best start they can, and the preparation to be our leaders of tomorrow.

A truly unique opportunity exists for a seasoned professional with proven expertise in the delivery of major capital projects to join the Surrey School District as the Director of the Capital Project Office.

Reporting to the Secretary-Treasurer and to the Executive Project Board (Deputy Minister of Education, CEO, Partnerships BC, Superintendent, Surrey School District, Secretary-Treasurer, Surrey School District), the Director, Capital Project Office is responsible for providing overall management for the development and implementation of major capital projects in the Surrey School District. The Director is responsible for the fulfillment of all project deliverables within approved budget and timelines, including hiring project managers, technicians, consultants and support staff; project accounting and reporting; legal obligations; risk management; communications and stakeholder engagement; and quality control. In addition to providing oversight of capital projects, the Director works closely with internal and external stakeholders to define and implement project specifications that best enable the District to meet its current and future requirements in terms of capacity and long-term functionality.

As the ideal candidate, you are an experienced project leader; a “doer” with a demonstrable track record of on-time and on-budget delivery of significant capital projects. You are energetic, forward thinking, innovative and environmentally astute. You are a collaborator, able to recognize and utilize others’ areas of expertise. Your professional background includes working with school districts, municipalities, provincial or federal entities, or within other comparably complex facilities environments. You hold a university degree in a relevant specialization (e.g. architecture, engineering, construction management and/or related fields), and ideally, a relevant designation such as a P.Eng or Architect AIBC.
