The University of British Columbia
Director, Application Sustainment

Consistently ranked amongst the top 20 public universities and the best 40 public and private universities in the world, The University of British Columbia (UBC) is a global centre for research and teaching. UBC’s spirit has embraced innovation and challenged the status quo since 1915. With two main campuses (Vancouver and Okanagan) located on the traditional territories of the Musqueam Coast Salish and Okanagan peoples, UBC’s entrepreneurial perspective encourages students, staff and faculty to challenge convention, lead discovery and explore new ways of learning. Bold thinking is given a place to define ideas that change the world at UBC

Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President, Information Technology & CIO (CIO), the Director, Application Sustainment (Director) participates as a collaborative member of the IT Senior Leadership Team. The Director is responsible for ensuring UBC IT and the portfolio is a great place for people; fostering a respectful workplace, building a cohesive team, mentoring and coaching staff to achieve their full potential, and ensuring diversity and inclusion, along with career and succession planning.

The Director oversees the application portfolio which involves building, configuring, maintaining or enhancing, and eventually decommissioning single applications and services through the life cycle. This portfolio encompasses a wide variety of applications and platforms related to teaching and learning, research, and administration activities. They will lead application portfolio staff through a continuously changing context, providing a guiding vision toward a future state. The Director will also engage on various UBC committees and works collaboratively with leaders and staff from all sections of the CIO’s portfolio, and the broader UBC team, and has interdependencies with other Information Technology groups at UBC as well as UBC faculties and administrative groups.

The ideal candidate will have a vision for how a strategically planned and managed applications portfolio can provide stability, flexibility, change readiness and scalability, in addition to improving efficiencies in a diverse and highly complex environment where building and maintaining relationships is crucial to delivering solutions that enable UBC to meet its strategic objectives. The Director will possess a nurturing and supportive leadership approach, with an ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of faculties to reach new goals that serve the needs of the institution and the broader community. They will also have a demonstrable reputation as a skillful communicator, an expert influencer, an outstanding motivating team leader, and a true talent manager.

Additionally, the incumbent will have a track record of navigating ambiguity effectively, maintaining outstanding stakeholder relationships, and positively impacting transformation. They will possess impressive technical knowledge as a foundation combined with the ability to understand institutional strategy and develop departmental initiatives to enable these goals. A background maturing governance as well as implementing Lean IT, Agile development, and DevOps principles and frameworks is required.

UBC hires on the basis of merit and is strongly committed to equity and diversity within its community.  The University welcomes applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, and others with the skills and knowledge to productively engage with diverse communities. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
