The University of British Columbia
Vice President, Human Resources

Consistently ranking amongst the top 20 public universities and the best 40 public and private universities in the world, the University of British Columbia (UBC) is a global centre for research and teaching. UBC’s spirit has embraced innovation and challenged the status quo since 1915. With two main campuses (Vancouver and Okanagan) located on the traditional territories of the Musqueam Coast Salish and Okanagan peoples, UBC’s entrepreneurial perspective encourages students, staff and faculty to challenge convention, lead discovery and explore new ways of learning. Bold thinking is given a place to define ideas that change the world at UBC.

An incredible opportunity exists to lead the Human Resources portfolio for one of the world’s foremost universities. The Vice President, Human Resources will be collaborative and confidently lead a dedicated group of HR professionals as they strive for excellence and work to accomplish the vision, commitments, goals, and actions as set out in UBC’s strategic plan.

Reporting to the President and an integral member of the senior leadership team, the VP, HR will support the University’s Board in exercising their governance responsibilities and will work collaboratively with leadership, management, students, faculty and staff across the university and with key external constituencies to enhance the University’s ability to achieve its people objectives, and sustain a culture that sees people as the University’s greatest strength. That culture is one of mutual respect, positive relations, inclusive of difference, wellbeing and outstanding contribution.

The VP, HR is a champion of collaboration and inclusion, who nurtures relationships by being present, engaged and committed to advancing the values of shared responsibility and accountability across the university. Possessing superior leadership acumen and a truly strategic focus when implementing HR best-practices, the incumbent will optimize HR’s role as a truly effective partner across both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses.

As the ideal candidate, you bring ten to fifteen years’ experience as a strategic and progressive senior Human Resources executive with an extensive background in leading a large team in a complex, multi-faceted, unionized environment. You have a keen understanding of diverse institutional needs and are comfortable with taking a proactive approach in creating consultative partnerships in a distributed decision-making environment. In addition, you bring outstanding consensus and team-building skills as well as a demonstrated commitment to equity, difference and inclusion. You are known to be fair and equitable, to exercise good judgment on all issues, and you possess the presence, stature and knowledge to build credibility throughout the entire University community. Your experience is augmented by a law or graduate degree in a related discipline.

UBC hires on the basis of merit and is strongly committed to equity and diversity within its community. The University welcomes applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, and others with the skills and knowledge to productively engage with diverse communities. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
