Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Human Resources, the Director, Labour Relations and HR Consulting Services (Director), is a key member of the Human Resources (HR) leadership team. The Director works collaboratively with all the members of the HR leadership team to develop, support and advance HR and university strategic or operational priorities. The Director is accountable for developing and promoting, constructive and collaborative relationships with staff unions with a view to enhance the work experience of employees and support the attainment of institutional goals. The Director is responsible for translating institutional priorities into collective bargaining strategy and is the university’s chief negotiator for five staff collective agreements. The incumbent is responsible for overseeing the administration and interpretation of these agreements and providing guidance and advice on a range of related matters including workplace investigations, grievances, arbitration, organizational change, and applicable labour relations-related legislation.

The Director also oversees the delivery of a proactive Human Resource Consulting (HRC) Service. HR Consultants are key connectors with other professional staff in HR and work as strategic ‘business partners’ with assigned portfolio leaders to identify workforce development needs, advance and integrate strategic HR programs, and provide advice, guidance, coaching, facilitation and training that supports client strategic and operational objectives.

As a true business partner throughout the organization, the Director, is comfortable moving into the unknown, fostering individual and team engagement, leveraging technology, advancing reconciliation, EDI and anti-racism initiatives, recognizing efficiencies and providing meaningful solutions across the university. The Director is an intelligent, compassionate, collaborative and engaging HR professional who conveys confidence that the team is contemporary, agile, attentive and service-focused.

A minimum of 10 years’ applicable experience in a senior labour relations role in a large complex, multi-union environment, including 5 years of management experience is required. Demonstrated expertise successfully leading negotiations for multiple concurrent bargaining tables is a must. Public sector bargaining experience is a significant asset. Relevant university education, preferably with an advanced degree such as Master’s in Business Administration or Industrial Relations or a professional degree in Law; or an equivalent combination of education and experience is sought. A CHRP designation preferred.
