Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) provides executive leadership and strategic direction for the City’s financial operations, including procurement, treasury, taxation, revenue, budgets, financial planning, payroll, and accounting functions. As a member of the City Leadership Team, the CFO serves as a strategic advisor to the CAO, Mayor, and Council on financial policies, budget strategies, long-term fiscal planning, capital reserve strategy, revenue generation, and risk management—all while promoting transparency, accountability, collaboration, and service excellence across the organization.

As CFO, you will:

  • Understand Operations: Develop a deep understanding of the City’s unique lines of business to provide proactive financial guidance and equip departmental leaders with the tools to manage their functional areas effectively.
  • Establish Trusted Advisory: Build trust and credibility with the Mayor and Council, positioning the finance team as a key strategic partner and support in complex decision-making.
  • Drive Financial Innovation: Bring a fresh, progressive perspective to revenue opportunities, capital funding, and long-term asset management to ensure Council’s vision is achieved sustainably.
  • Foster Culture & Service: Instill a culture of innovation, entrepreneurialism, and service excellence across the finance department.

As the ideal candidate, you are a strategic, solution-oriented leader who can guide and direct a finance department to drive for organizational excellence and change. You bring an entrepreneurial mindset, adaptability, and can identify opportunities for improvement, innovation and calculated risk taking within a highly complex and regulated environment.  You can establish yourself as a trusted, credible advisor to Council through transparency, strong grounding in governance and ethics, a humble approach, and commitment to community service. You bring strong interpersonal skills, and a relationship style that favors direct and authentic conversation and a shared commitment to doing what’s best for the City and its residents. As a people leader, you are capable of developing and motivating your team to execute change, while functioning as a genuine public servant committed to the organization’s mission and the Burnaby Promise.

The targeted salary range for this position is $241,081- $267,853 annually, supplemented by a defined benefits pension plan and a competitive total rewards package.
