Manager of Planning Services

Tofino, which is situated within the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, is best described as stunning and often referred to as one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Located on the west coast of Vancouver Island and home to approximately 2500 residents, Tofino is one of the top destinations to visit on Vancouver Island. Known as a balanced community, it has earned a reputation as a year-round tourist destination and is respected internationally for spectacular scenery and all-season recreation including world-class beachcombing, whale watching, kayaking, wilderness hiking, deep-sea fishing, and winter storm watching. To achieve its mission of efficiently providing services that enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors, the District of Tofino is looking to attract an accomplished municipal leader as Manager of Planning Services.

Reporting to the Director of Community Services, the Manager of Planning Services (Manager) is responsible for development services including planning, building inspection; parks planning; bylaw services; and emergency preparedness. In order to effectively deliver services and provide sound advice, the Manager must work closely and collaboratively with all members of the District, as well as with external partners such as the local First Nation, the planning community, provincial and federal agencies, and others.

The ideal candidate is a proven leader with a passion for public service. Possessing multiple years of experience in the field of municipal planning, the Manager is a creative, innovative, and strategic thinker, an outstanding communicator, and has a demonstrated track record in working collaboratively with a wide variety of partners in order to develop sustainable solutions. This individual is a contemporary leader and well-versed in effecting change to improve operations and service delivery. They have a reputation for being an experienced leader who can lead and engage a diverse team of functional professionals and experts. In addition, the Manager brings an exceptional reputation for achieving results in a multi-partner environment, taking a systems-view of issues.

The targeted salary range for this position is $103,273 – $118,705 annually, supplemented by a competitive total rewards package. The successful candidate will also have access to subsidized housing – a 2-bedroom apartment located within Tofino.
