Vancouver School Board
Executive Director, Finance

The Vancouver School Board (VSB) is one of Canada’s most diverse urban school systems, with more than 107 schools and programs serving over 50,000 students. With deep gratitude and respect, VSB is honoured to be learning and unlearning on the ancestral and unceded lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Swxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). VSB embraces Indigenous ways of knowing and learning and works to expand Indigenous perspectives across the curriculum and within its schools and programs, where nearly 5% of students identify as being of Indigenous ancestry. Equity and inclusivity are central to VSB’s approach to education. Its 7,700 staff foster learning environments where students thrive by prioritizing their needs, using evidence-informed practices, and building strong relationships. VSB’s culture reflects the diversity of Vancouver and the communities it serves.

VSB is seeking a forward-thinking financial executive to lead its finance, procurement and administration departments as Executive Director, Finance. Reporting to the Secretary-Treasurer and working closely with the Superintendent and senior leadership team, the Executive Director provides strategic oversight of finance, procurement, administrative services, and food services across a large and dynamic public education system. The role includes leadership of the board’s Accounting, Budgeting, Procurement, Administrative Services, and Material Services teams. It also plays a key role in shaping VSB’s financial strategy, facilitating the annual budget process, managing treasury and risk, and leading and contributing to rights holder, stakeholder and public engagement. A key priority will be strengthening internal controls, improving documentation, and ensuring clear roles and responsibilities across the team to enhance accountability and mitigate organizational risk. This includes reviewing and rebuilding key financial processes, developing robust policies and procedures, and aligning systems to support consistent, organization-wide practices.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical knowledge of public sector accounting, internal controls, and budgeting, along with experience leading finance functions in complex, multi-partner organizations. They are effective at coaching and developing staff, supporting learning and growth, and ensuring strong cross-functional relationships. They can lead change in environments that require new structures, processes, and clarity, while maintaining empathy, respect, and accountability. They are politically astute, comfortable with public-facing engagement, and able to support the Board, trustees, and the senior leadership team in making informed decisions. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing VSB’s long-term goals and ensuring resources are aligned to deliver meaningful impact for students, staff, and the broader community.

The targeted salary range for this position is $191,937 to $213,264 per year and is supplemented by a comprehensive benefits package.
